African American Quality of Life

So I went to a meeting last night for the African American Resource Advisory Commission (for another class) but I talked to the president of the Austin chapter of the NAACP while I was there and got his perspective on the issues facing the east side right now. Just thought I would share.

He sees education as a major issue (citing Johnston being shut down and Pierce possible following), and he also mentioned infrastructure (like not installing sidewalks around new developments which limits people's access). He thinks improvements have been made in arts and culture, but that more could be done to bring black performers/artists to Austin to keep people from going to Dallas and Houston for their entertainment. Check out this report (scroll down to bottom of page and download the PDF of African American Quality of Life Scorecard- http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/aaql/) It has a lot of useful information.
